How you view a web page will depend on how your browser settings are configured If you install a new web browser, or buy a new computer with a browser already up and running, then you are probably operating under the default settings, or settings chosen by the installation technician. If you have never adjusted a browser setting then you probably aren't aware of their existance. These settings may impede your appreciation of a web site: sound, animation, video may be switched off. Pop-up windows may be blocked. Scrolling, fonts, colours and hyper-links may not display as intended. The designers of web sites assume that certain basic functions are active at the browser end of the business. If the browser has limited some features it will result in the web site not displaying or responding as the designer intended. This can only be fixed at your computer. It is also important to understand that all browsers have gone through revisions and updates. Older versions of popular browsers do not support later web features. As an example the Google Maps feature does not work on Internet Explorer earlier than Version 6. If you cannot get certain web features to work then also check that your browser (and its version) is capable. All browsers have different ways of controlling these settings. Two of the most popular browsers are shown here as examples. Before making adjustments have a pen and paper at hand to note any changes - you can later reset them. Do not adjust anything that you do not understand. If you do wish to experiment then change one parameter at a time and note the functional change. Always record the changes. If in doubt find out more about the definition of terms and descriptions. If in further doubt - do NOT make adjustments - seek assistance. |
