Notes on 'The Dart' and the E.C. Mountfort illustrations listed.
The Dart was a weekly Liberal magazine, published in Birmingham from 1876 - 1911
It is thought that it was distributed locally within the Birmingham area to those of a Liberal leaning.
It featured satirical illustrations and caricatures by E.C. Mountfort mocking politicians of the day.
Described elsewhere as a 'Birmingham Pictorial' or 'Satirical Periodical'.
Some of the illustrations are of local, Birmingham and Warwickshire interest,
and others are of a more national interest.
Frequent references to 'The Caucus' indicate the Birmingham Liberal Caucus,
an organisation set up in 1865.
There is no attempt here to interpret the political message embedded in these cartoons.
The main targets appear to be the Birmingham Council, Mayor and Conservative Party members of the 1880s.
Here, the descriptions of prints indicate illustrated characters in order to enhance search criteria.
Users may wish to investigate further with their own searches using keywords featured the text on this page.
The listed prints have slight surface discolouration and some foxing or staining to greater or lesser degrees.
There is very little internet search material available related to 'The
Dart' so it is assumed that most of the weekly distribution, like most
newspaper material has perished naturally, making these illustrations
quite rare specimens on the open market.
